CONFERENCE LOCATION

Polytech Château-Gombert is located within the Technopôle de Château-Gombert in the 13th arrondissement of Marseille. Because this area is a prominent university and science hub, the accommodation options generally fall into two main categories: student/long-term residences and short-term visitor accommodations (hotels or guest houses).

1. Student & Long-Term Residences (Closest to Campus)

If you are a student, researcher, or intern staying for a semester or longer, these residences are practically on your doorstep.

  • Résidence Château Gombert (Habitat Pluriel): Located at 38, rue Joliot Curie, it is just a short 5-minute walk from Polytech. It offers fully furnished T1, T1 Bis, and T2 apartments with amenities like a gym, laundry facilities, and secure bike storage.

  • Cité U Alice Chatenoud & Cité U Claude Delorme: Managed by CROUS (the regional student service agency), these public university residences offer budget-friendly rooms and studios roughly 5 to 10 minutes away by foot or bus.

  • Résidence Les Balustres: Located just over 1 km away from the main tech hub, offering quiet, furnished student lodging

2. Short-Term Hotels & Guest Houses (Château-Gombert Area)

For short-term stays (conferences, entrance exams, or family visits), the immediate neighborhood is suburban and residential, featuring intimate hotels or private guesthouses.

  • Lou Bastido: Located at 26 Chemin De Palama, this charming local hotel/guest house is about 1 km away from the campus. It sits in a quieter, greener part of the Château-Gombert district.

  • Hôtel des Moulins: Located nearby in Allauch/Enco de Botte (approx. 4 km away). A great budget/mid-range option if you have a car or are willing to take a short taxi/bus ride.

  • Chambre D'Hôtes Au Coeur Des Oliviers: A well-rated bed-and-breakfast option on Chemin de Palama that offers a more traditional, local Provencal stay close to the technology park.

3. Alternative: Commuting from Central Marseille

If you prefer a lively neighborhood or a traditional hotel chain, it is highly recommended to stay near the Marseille Saint-Charles Train Station or Vieux-Port (Old Port).

Why this works:

The Metro Line 1 (M1) runs directly from central Marseille (Saint-Charles or Vieux-Port) up to the La Rose terminus station. From La Rose, the Très Très Bus (B3B) or Bus 42 drops you off right inside the Technopôle near Polytech. The entire commute takes about 30–40 minutes.

  • Toyoko Inn Marseille Saint Charles: A highly-rated, reliable business hotel right next to the main train station.

  • Holiday Inn Express Marseille Saint Charles: Extremely convenient for transit, located right across from the metro line that connects to the campus.

  • easyHotel Marseille Euromed: A reliable, clean, and modern budget option situated a bit further west, but well-connected via public transit.

TRAVEL & OTHER INFORMATION

Marseille is France’s oldest and second-largest city. It is a vibrant, sun-drenched Mediterranean port with a distinct personality—gritty, proud, multicultural, and deeply historic. It is entirely different from the polished luxury of Nice or the classical romance of Paris.

1. Traveling To Marseille

By Air

  • Marseille Provence Airport (MRS): Located about 25 km northwest of the city center.

  • Airport Transit: The most reliable way to get to the city center is the Airport Shuttle Bus (Ligne 91), which runs every 10–15 minutes directly to the main train station, Gare Saint-Charles. The ride takes about 30 minutes.

By Train

  • Gare Saint-Charles: This is the city's central transport hub. High-speed TGV trains connect Marseille to Paris in just over 3 hours, and it offers direct regional connections across the French Riviera.

2. Local Travel Within Marseille

The local transit system is run by the RTM (Régie des Transports de Marseille) and is well-connected.

  • The Metro: There are two lines (M1 and M2) that intersect at Saint-Charles and Castellane. They are fast, clean, and run until around 12:30 AM.

  • Trams and Buses: Three modern tramway lines crisscross the central districts. Buses cover the outer neighborhoods (like the Château-Gombert tech hub or the beaches).

  • Ferry-Boat: A historic, quirky, and very short ferry crosses the Vieux-Port (Old Port) from one side to the other. It is a fun, cheap local tradition.

  • Maritime Shuttles (Les Navettes Maritimes): Operating mostly in the warmer spring and summer months, these public boats run from the Vieux-Port to coastal neighborhoods like Pointe Rouge and L'Estaque, as well as the nearby Frioul Islands.

Transit Money Tip: A single ticket bought at a station kiosk costs roughly €1.60 and is valid for one hour of transfers across buses, trams, and one metro entry. Avoid buying tickets directly from bus drivers if possible, as they charge a premium (€1.90). If you plan to sightsee heavily, look into the Marseille City Pass (24, 48, or 72 hours), which gives you unlimited transit alongside free entry to museums and boat tours.

3. Important Information for Tourists

The Vibe & Culture

Marseille is a casual coastal city. People are deeply passionate about football (supporting Olympique de Marseille is practically a religion) and local traditions like drinking Pastis (an anise-flavored aperitif) and eating Bouillabaisse (a traditional, rich fish stew).

Top Districts to Explore

  • Le Vieux-Port (Old Port): The bustling heart of the city, lined with cafes, seafood spots, and a daily fish market.

  • Le Panier: The oldest neighborhood in France. It is a maze of steep, narrow cobblestone streets filled with street art, artisan shops, and colorful facade houses.

  • Notre-Dame de la Garde: The iconic basilica perched on the city's highest hill. It offers a breathtaking 360-degree view of Marseille and the sea.

  • Les Calanques National Park: A stunning stretch of dramatic limestone cliffs and hidden turquoise inlets located just south of the city, perfect for hiking and swimming.
